Tekirdağtĕkēr'dä, city (1990 pop. 80,207), capital of Tekirdağ prov., NW Turkey, on the Sea of Marmara. It is a small port and an agricultural trade center. It was known in ancient times as Bisanthe and as Rhaedestus and later as Rodosto. Founded by Greek colonists from Sámos, it later became an important city of the Thracian kingdom. It was conquered by the Ottoman Turks c.1360. The name was officially changed to Tekirdağ in 1923.

Tekirdağ is a city in Eastern Thrace, in the European part of Turkey. Tekirdağ is the capital of Tekirdağ Province, felt by the local people to be a quieter and more pleasant town than the industrial centre of Çorlu, which it administers. The city population as of 2008 was 137,962 . There are honorary consulates of Hungary and Bulgaria in Tekirdağ. Tekirdağ's historical names include Rodosto or Rhaedestos and during the Byzantine era, it was also called Bisanthi. It was called as Rodosçuk after it fell to the Ottomans in the 14th century.
