Syltzĭlt, Ger. zült, island (1994 pop. 5,543), 36 sq mi (93 sq km), Schleswig-Holstein, N Germany, in the North Sea. It is the largest of the North Frisian Islands and is connected by a causeway to the mainland; the two main towns are Westerland, a popular seaside tourist spot, and Kampen, a wealthier resort. Except in its cultivated western tip, the island is covered by dunes and heathland; fishing, agriculture, and tourism are the chief industries. Fortified in the 1930s, Sylt was one an early air target of the Allies during World War II. Erosion is an ongoing problem.

Sylt is an island in northern Germany, part of Nordfriesland district, Schleswig-Holstein and well known for the distinctive shape of its shoreline. It belongs to the North Frisian Islands and is the largest island in North Frisia. The northernmost island in Germany, it is known for its tourist resorts, notably Westerland, Kampen and Wenningstedt-Braderup, as well as for its 40 km long sandy beach. It is frequently covered by the media in connection with its exposed situation in the North Sea and its ongoing loss of land during storm tides. Since 1927 Sylt has been connected to the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm causeway.
