Skaraskä'rä′, city (1990 pop. 10,790), Skaraborg co., S Sweden. Situated in a farming region, it has industries that manufacture metal goods and footwear. Dating from at least the 9th cent., Skara is one of Sweden's oldest cities; the country's first bishopric was established there in the 11th cent. The city has also been an educational center since 1641, when Sweden's earliest institutions of higher learning were founded there. Skara has an imposing cathedral (12th cent.; restored 1894).

Skara is a locality and the seat of Skara Municipality, Västra Götaland County, Sweden with 10,963 inhabitants in 2005. Despite its small size, it has a long educational and ecclesiastical history. One of Sweden's oldest high schools, Katedralskolan, is situated in Skara. When the new gymnasium was built in 1988, it kept the old name and the old school was named Djäkneskolan. Skara is located by the E20 motorway, about 130 kilometers northeast of Gothenburg, in the centre of Västergötland. The name Skara comes from Skåra or Skarv, which means score.
