Shimlashĭm'lə, town (1991 pop. 110,360), capital of Himachal Pradesh state, NW India. It is situated on a forested ridge (c.7,100 ft/2,165 m high) in the W Himalayas. Shimla is a summer resort and a large market for potatoes; an airport is nearby. There is handloom weaving, brewing, and some light manufacturing. The town is the seat of Hamachal Univ.

Shimla, originally called Simla, is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, Shimla was declared the summer capital of the British Raj in India. A popular tourist destination, Shimla is often referred to as the "Queen of Hills". Located in the north-west Himalayas at an average altitude of, the city of Shimla, draped in forests of pine, rhododendron, and oak, experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters.
