An important port, it is one of the major commercial centers of Java. Tobacco, sugar, rubber, coffee, and kapok are exported. There are textile, glass, fishing, and shipbuilding industries. The city is the seat of Diponegoro Univ.

It has an area of 225.17 km² and a population of approximately 1.5 million people, making it Indonesia's fifth largest city. Semarang is located at.
