Columbia Encyclopedia entry: Satu-Mare
Satu-Maresä'too-mä'rĕ, Hung. Szatmárnémeti or Szatmár, city (1990 pop. 137,723), NW Romania, in Crişana-Maramureş, on the Someşul River, near the Hungarian border. The administrative, commercial, and cultural center of a fertile agricultural region, it has industries that produce mining equipment, textiles, machinery, and various consumer products. It is also an important railway junction, with connections to Hungary and Ukraine. The peace of Szatmár, negotiated there in 1711, ended the rebellion of Francis II Rakoczy. The seat of a Roman Catholic bishop, Satu-Mare has three cathedrals and an old palace. There is a large Hungarian minority.

Satu Mare (redirected from SatuMare) or Máréfalva is a commune, Satu Mare County, Romania. The commune as a population of 1,962 and has an absolute Székely Hungarian majority. Check Brădeşti for demographic details. The commune is home to some 95 beautiful Székelykapu, famous Székely engraved and painted wooded gates. This traditional village famous for its dove-cotted gates lies at an altitude of 540-560 m, in the narrow valley of the Fenyéd Stream, along the 13A road, 9 km from Odorheiu Secuiesc, at the foot of the Cekend Plateau.
