Remscheidrĕm'shīt, city (1994 pop. 123,610), North Rhine–Westphalia, W Germany, on the Wupper River. It is a leading center of the German tool and hardware industry; it has manufactures in iron. Remscheid was first mentioned in the 11th cent. and chartered in 1808. Its masonry dam (completed 1891) is the oldest in Germany. The city was badly damaged (1943) during World War II.

Remscheid is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is, after Wuppertal and Solingen, the third largest municipality in Bergisches Land, being located on the northern edge of the region, on south side of the Ruhr area. The registered population was 113,935 in 2007. Remscheid was founded in the 12th century, but remained a small village until the 19th century. Early spellings for the city included Remissgeid, Rymscheyd, Reymscheyd and Rembscheid. The economic growth of the entire Rhine-Ruhr region led to an increase of the population of Remscheid.
