Oshawaŏsh'əwə, city (1991 pop. 129,344), SE Ont., Canada, on Lake Ontario. The production of automobiles, begun in 1907, is the leading industry, since Oshawa is the home site of General Motors of Canada. Other products include metals, glass, plastics, machine parts, furniture, leather and woolen goods, and electrical appliances. The town is on the site of a French trading post; there is now an automobile museum.

Oshawa is a city in Ontario, Canada, on the Lake Ontario shoreline. It lies in Southern Ontario approximately 60 kilometres east of downtown Toronto. It is commonly viewed as the eastern anchor of both the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe. It is not, however, part of the Toronto CMA but has its own metropolitan area, the fourteenth largest in Canada. It is the largest community in the Regional Municipality of Durham. The name Oshawa originates from the Ojibwa term aazhaway, meaning "the crossing place" or just "cross".
