Novaranōvä'rä, city (1991 pop. 101,112), capital of Novara prov., Piedmont, N Italy. It is an agricultural and industrial center and a rail junction. Manufactures include textiles, chemicals, machinery, metals, processed food, and printed materials. It is a major market for rice. Several battles were fought (1500, 1513) near Novara during the Italian Wars. At Novara, in Mar., 1849, the Austrians under Radetzky defeated the Piedmontese under Charles Albert (see Risorgimento). The Church of San Gaudenzio (16th–17th cent.) has an impressive campanile (19th cent.).

Novara is the capital city of the province of Novara in the Piedmont region in northwest Italy, to the west of Milan. With c. 103.602 inhabitants, it is the second most populous city in Piedmont after Turin and it is the second urban area of the Region Piedmont with 190,000 inhabitants. It is an important crossroads for commercial traffic along the routes from Milan to Turin and from Genoa to Switzerland. Novara lies between the rivers Agogna and Terdoppio in northeastern Piedmont, 38 km from Milan and 95 km from Turin. Novara was founded in ancient times by the Romans.
