Nieuwpoort or Nieuportboth: nē'oopôrt, town (1991 pop. 9,572), West Flanders prov., W Belgium, on the North Sea at the mouth of the Yser River. It is a fishing port, an industrial center, and a beach resort. The site of a strong fortress, Nieuwpoort suffered heavily in the many wars of the Low Countries and was almost completely destroyed by the Germans in World War I.
