Mathuramă'thoorä, mŭ'trə or Muttramŭ'trə, city (1991 pop. 235,922), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Yamuna River. An agricultural market town and district administrative center, it is best known as a Hindu pilgrimage site, the reputed birthplace of the god Krishna. The region, which may have been inhabited since the 7th cent. B.C., is rich in archaeological remains. Muslim rulers (16th–18th cent.) destroyed many Hindu temples in the city and erected mosques.

Mathura (redirected from Mathura) is a holy city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located approximately 50 km north of Agra, and 150 km south of Delhi; about twenty kilometers from holy Vrindavan. It is the administrative centre of Mathura District of Uttar Pradesh. During the ancient period, Mathura was an economic hub, located at the junction of important caravan routes. Mathura is reputed to be the birthplace of Krishna at the centre of Braja or Brij-bhoomi, called Krishna-janma-bhoomi, literary 'Krishna's birth place'.
