Ludwigsburgloot'vĭkhsboorkh′, city (1994 pop. 86,220), Baden-Württemberg, SW Germany, near the Neckar River. It is a transportation and industrial center. Manufactures include machine tools, iron and wire goods, porcelain, and organs. There are hot mineral springs in the suburb of Hoheneck. Ludwigsburg grew around the large baroque castle built (1704–33) in imitation of Versailles by Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg. Schiller lived in Ludwigsburg from 1768 to 1773 and from 1793 to 1794 and attended a nearby military school. The city is the birthplace of the poets J. Kerner and E. Mörike, the theologian D. F. Strauss, and the philosopher F. T. Vischer.

Ludwigsburg is a city in Germany, about north of Stuttgart's city center, near the river Neckar. It is the capital of the Ludwigsburg District, and belongs to the Stuttgart Region in the Administrative region of Stuttgart.
The middle of Neckarland, in which Ludwigsburg lies, was settled in the Stone age and in the Bronze age. Numerous archaeological finds from the city and the surrounding area remain from the time when it was settled by the Celts.
Toward the end of the 1st century, the Romans occupied the region. They pushed the Limes further to the east around 150, and controlled the region until 260, when the Alamanni occupied the Neckarland....more »
