Joensuuyô'ĕnsoo, city (1998 pop. 51,113), Eastern Finland prov., SE Finland. It is the trade center of the forest region of NE Karelia, has plywood mills, and is an important lake port. It was chartered in 1848 as a copper town. The modern city hall was designed by Eliel Saarinen. A university was established there in 1969.

Joensuu is a city and municipality in North Karelia in eastern Finland. It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of North Karelia region. It was founded in 1848. The population of Joensuu is . Joensuu is a lively student city with over 8,000 students enrolled at the University of Joensuu and a further 3,500 at the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences.
