Itasca, Lakeītăs'kə, shallow lake, 2 sq mi (5.2 sq km), in a pine-wooded swampy region, NW Minn. Henry R. Schoolcraft identified the lake (1832) as the source of the Mississippi; stepping stones cross the river at its exit point. Although inarguably the source of the named river, the river's true physical course has been disputed by geographers. In 1891 the region was included in a state park, which has a historical and natural history museum. A school of forestry and a biological research station are nearby.

Lake Itasca is a small glacial lake, approximately 1.8 square miles in area, in the Lake District of Northwestern Minnesota. The lake is located in southeastern Clearwater County within Itasca State Park and it has an average depth of 20-35 feet, and is 1,475 ft above sea level.
It is the source of the Mississippi River which flows 2,340 mi to the Gulf of Mexico; however, the exact point cannot be located, because there are many small tributaries and marshy areas that drain into the Mississippi watershed.
