Hythehīth, town (1991 pop. 13,118), Kent, SE England. A summer resort and market town, it was one of the Cinque Ports until shingle drift lowered its value. Nearby Saltwood Castle, once the property of the archbishops of Canterbury, is supposed to have been the scene of the plotting of the murder (1170) of Thomas à Becket. The town was raided by Napoleon's troops. At Hythe is the School of Small Arms.
