Halmstadhälm'städ′, city (1990 est. pop. 48,880), capital of Halland co., SW Sweden, a seaport on the Kattegat at the mouth of the Nissan River. It is an industrial center and summer resort. Manufactures include textiles, engineering, brewing, and paper, and shipbuilding is carried on. Chartered in 1307, Halmstad was an important fortified city of Denmark before being conquered by Sweden in 1645. Of note are a Gothic church (14th cent.) and a 17th-century castle.

Halmstad is a port, university, industrial and recreational city at the mouth of Nissan in the province of Halland on the Swedish west coast. Halmstad is the seat of Halmstad Municipality and the capital of Halland County. The city has a population of about 55,688, out of a municipal total of nearly 90,000. Halmstad received its first city charter in 1307, and the city celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2007. The oldest remains of that first town are to be found at "Övraby" upstream on Nissan, quite close to the regiment buildings.
