Gävle is a city, the seat of Gävle Municipality and the capital of Gävleborg County in Sweden. It has 68,700 inhabitants in 2005. It is the oldest city in the historical Norrland, as it received its charter in 1446 by Christopher of Bavaria.

Gävle stems from the word
gavel, meaning river banks in old Swedish, by the river Gavleån. The oldest settlement was called Gavle-ägarna in Swedish, which means
Gavel-owners. This name was eventually shortened to
Gavle, then
Gefle, and finally
Gävle.
