Fujairahfoojī'rä, sheikhdom (1995 pop. 76,254), c.450 sq mi (1,170 sq km), part of the federation of seven United Arab Emirates, SE Arabia, on the Gulf of Oman. Agriculture, fishing, and boatbuilding are principal industries; no oil of any worth has been found in Fujairah, and it is one of the less developed emirates. Its ownership was contested in the late 19th cent. Fujairah was a British protectorate until it joined the United Arab Emirates in 1971.

Fujairah is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, and the only one on the Gulf of Oman in the country's east instead of Persian Gulf. The Emirate of Fujairah covers, or about 1.5% of the area of the UAE, and is the fifth largest Emirate in the UAE. Its population is around 130,000 inhabitants. Only the Emirate of Umm al-Quwain has fewer occupants. Fujairah is the only Emirate of the UAE that is almost totally mountainous. All the other Emirates, like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are located on the west coast, and are largely covered by desert.
