Colma, city (1990 pop. 1,103), San Mateo co., W Calif., a suburb S of San Francisco, on Colma Creek, inc. 1924 as Lawndale, renamed 1941. Shopping centers and automobile dealerships are important to Colma's economy, but nearly three quarters of the city's land is devoted to 17 cemeteries, the first of which was established in 1887. The city, which was incorporated in order to protect the cemeteries from development, is known as the City of Souls.

Colma (redirected from Colma) is a small incorporated town in San Mateo County, California, at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 1,191 at the 2000 census. The town was founded as a necropolis in 1924. With much of Colma's land dedicated to cemeteries, the dead population outnumber the living by thousands to one. This has led to it being called, "the city of the silent," and also has given rise to a humorous motto among some residents: "It's great to be alive in Colma."
