Ceredigion, county, 694 sq mi (1,797 sq km), W Wales. Ceredigion, corresponding to the former county of Cardiganshire, was established in 1996 when the nonmetropolitan county of Dyfed was dissolved. Cardiganshire (Welsh Sir Ceredigion) had been joined with Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in 1974 to form Dyfed.

Ceredigion is a county and former kingdom in mid-west Wales. In extent it is more or less identical to the historic county of Cardiganshire, and it was reconstituted as a county under that name in 1996, reverting to Ceredigion a day later.
Ceredigion is a coastal county, bordered by Cardigan Bay to the west, Gwynedd to the north, Powys to the east, Carmarthenshire to the south, and Pembrokeshire to the south-west.
Its area is 440,630 acres. The population of the county at the 2001 census was 74,941.
