Columbia Encyclopedia entry: Bitonto
Bitontobētôn'tō, city (1991 pop. 53,772), Apulia, S Italy. It is an agricultural market and is noted for its olive oil. The Spanish under Charles Bourbon defeated the Austrians there in 1734 during the War of the Polish Succession. The Apulian Romanesque cathedral (12th–13th cent.) is especially remarkable for its fine sculptures.

Bitonto is a city and comune in the province of Bari, Italy. It is nicknamed the "City of Olives" due to the numerous olive groves surrounding the city. Bitonto lies approximately 11 km to the west of the city of Bari, near the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The communes next to Bitonto are: Bari, Bitetto, Palo del Colle, Altamura, Toritto, Ruvo di Puglia, Terlizzi, and Giovinazzo. The city was founded by the Peucetii, and its inhabitants referred to by the Greek settlers of the region as Butontinoi, an ethnonym of uncertain derivation Bitonto.net.
