Bichon FrisebēshôN' frēs, breed of small dog developed in France after World War I. It stands from 8 to 12 in. (20–30 cm) high at the shoulder and has a profuse, silky coat that is loosely curled. It is solid white or white with apricot, cream, or gray markings. A relative of the Maltese, the Bichon was first bred in the United States in the 1950s. It is exhibited in the miscellaneous class at dog shows sanctioned by the American Kennel Club. See dog.

A Bichon Frise is a small breed of dog of the Bichon type. They are popular pets, similar in appearance to, but larger than, the Maltese. They are a non-shedding breed that requires daily grooming. The Bichon Frise is a small but sturdy dog that weighs approx. 4–7 kg / 10-18 lbs and stands 23–30 cm/9-15in at the withers, but slightly larger dogs are not uncommon. It has a black nose and dark round eyes, and its white fur consists of a curly outercoat and a silky undercoat.
