Columbia Encyclopedia entry: Avery Island
Avery Island, salt dome, 163 ft (50 m) high and 2 mi (3.2 km) in diameter, S La., in an area of sea marshes and swamps. A corporation controlled by the Avery and McIlhenny families owns the island. Hot peppers grown there are used to make Tabasco sauce. Salt has been extracted since prehistoric times; rock salt has been mined there since 1862. Edward Avery McIlhenny, author of Bird City, created Jungle Gardens, which contains many rare plants, trees, and flowers. The island also has a bird sanctuary.

Avery Island (redirected from Avery Island) is a salt dome located in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, United States, about three miles inland from Vermilion Bay, which in turn opens onto the Gulf of Mexico. A small human population resides on the island. Long before its namesake Avery family settled there in the 1830s, American Indians discovered that Avery Island’s verdant flora covered a precious natural resource—a massive salt dome. There the Indians boiled the Island’s briny spring water to extract salt, which they traded to other tribes as far away as central Texas, Arkansas, and Ohio.
