Ascoli Picenoä'skōlē pēchĕ'nō, city (1991 pop. 53,591), capital of Ascoli Piceno prov., Marche region, central Italy, at the confluence of the Castellano and Tronto rivers. It is the market for a rich agricultural area and textiles and shoes are among its manufactures. A Roman settlement with extensive Roman remains, the city became a free republic in the 12th cent. and passed to papal control in the 15th cent.

Ascoli Piceno is a town and comune in the Marche region, Italy, capital of the province of the same name. Its population is 54,000 inhabitants . The town lies at the confluence of the Tronto River and the Castellano Creek and is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Two natural parks border the town, one on the north-western flank and the other on the south. Ascoli has good rail connections to the Adriatic coast and the city of San Benedetto del Tronto, by highway to Porto d'Ascoli and by the Italian National Road 4 Salaria to Rome.
