Alderneyôl'dərnē, Fr. Aurignyōrēnyē', anc. Riduna, island (1991 pop. 2,297), c.3 sq mi (7.7 sq km), in the English Channel, northernmost of the larger Channel Islands. It is separated from the French coast and from the other islands by swift tidal races. The soil is fertile and well cultivated about St. Anne, the principal town; the island's main crops are potatoes and grains. Tourism is important, as is dairy farming.

Alderney is the most northerly of the Channel Islands and a British Crown dependency. It is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It is long and wide. The area is, making it the third largest island of the Channel Islands, and the second largest in the Bailiwick. It is around to the west of La Hague in the Cotentin Peninsula, Normandy, in France, to the north-east of Guernsey and from the south coast of England.
