Agadirägädēr', ăgədēr', city (1994 pop. 155,244), SW Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean. Agadir has metal-processing industries and exports fruit and vegetables. While France was establishing a protectorate in Morocco, the German gunboat Panther appeared (1911) in Agadir with the intention of protecting German interests. For a time war seemed imminent, but the Germans dropped their demands when France ceded to them a substantial part of the French Congo. In 1960, Agadir was almost completely destroyed by earthquakes, but a new urban district was built outside the old city.

Agadir is a major city in southwest Morocco, capital of the Agadir province and the Sous-Massa-Draa economic region. The word Agadir means in Berber "wall, masoned wall enclosing a town, fortress, town". It is a loanword from Phoenician. Agadir has a population of 678,596. The population of the city proper is estimated at 200,000. The mild winter climate and good beaches have made it a major "winter sun" destination for Northern Europeans. The mayor is Tariq Kabbaj.
